It takes a special pair of varieties to create a functional blend; they must be indistinguishable, yet genetically unique. The varieties must be identical in critical traits such as establishment, color, density, leaf texture, disease resistance and overall turf quality to ensure both thrive. Combining two similar varieties ensure a consistent, uniform playing surface that does not show segregation. Piper and Oakley, while genetically quite different, perform almost identically.
